Dark map 700 kilometres around the Braunsberg with national borders: a broad green fan to the south-east across Hungary, amber strokes to the west and north-west, short red ones to the south-west; plus the figures 81° to 182° clear and 287° to 346° only marginal

What the Braunsberg sees

A paved car park at 343 metres, right at the summit, road all the way up, eleven kilometres to Bratislava: a site can hardly be better placed. The horizon says otherwise — the south-east lies wide open, and towards Germany the Vienna Woods sit almost exactly on the line of sight.

Orthophoto of the Feuerkogelhaus from above, darkened, with the outlines of the inn, the Christophorushütte, the chapel and the cable-car station: to the right of the inn an amber dot with a fan towards 328°, to the left between the house and the trees a green dot with three dashed fans towards 8°, 304° and 46°

Two times two Yagis on the Feuerkogel

The horizon was calculated, so were the stations. Now the installation: two stacked 12-element Yagis, one fixed on Germany, one on the rotator — and the question of where at the Feuerkogelhaus a mast may stand at all, when people walk on the right, paragliders take off on the left and the mountain drops away behind. Plus the comparison with the Stuhleck.

Dark map 700 kilometres around the Stuhleck with national borders: the rim arc is green without a break from 11° through east and south to 226°, with short amber pieces to the north-west and north; plus the numbers 11° to 226° and +0.1° to +0.8°

What the Stuhleck sees

The highest peak of the Fischbacher Alpen has a road up to the hut and a car park on the summit. 360 bearings, 800 kilometres, 3,215 contest logs, plus the laser scan for the hut next door — and a horizon none of the five sites before it has. Only Germany lies half behind the Rax.

Dark map 700 kilometres around the Feuerkogelhaus with national borders, every contest station a dot: bright where the horizon from the Feuerkogel is clear, amber behind the mountain. Two wedges mark the sectors of the two fixed antennas, 328° towards Germany and 37° towards Czechia and Poland; plus the counts of the German locator fields

Where the stations really are

The horizon was the first question, the other stations are the second. 3,215 contest logs from two years say where the antennas on the Feuerkogel have to look — and why the second one does not point at Prague.
