Jul 25 · two summits, 23 kilometres

Two summits, one day, 23 kilometres, 5:30 hours on the move. Weather you’d order if you could: clear sight to the limestone walls in the background, barely any wind, not a cloud in the way.

The approach to the Schwalbenmauer

This is the part worth knowing beforehand.

The route isn’t signposted. There’s no waymarking to hang onto. Anyone wanting to go up should already be comfortable with trackless terrain — very doable for the practised, not for anyone else.

A navigation device is well worth having. Not for convenience, but because there’s no second point of orientation.

There’s no water. No spring, no stream, nothing along the way. Whatever you need you carry up from below — and in that weather you need more than you think.

The Kasberg

Ninety metres higher and considerably friendlier to reach. From the summit the whole range lies open, and you can see just how far you’ve come.
